This article in the NYTimes, "Your new condo leaks? Join the club" describes the problem better than I can. There are so many poorly constructed luxury condos around Brooklyn these days. It's sad to think of how much money these new condo owners have spent on lawsuits over a home that started falling apart only months after the "grand opening."

Last week my tiny studio apartment was full of visiting friends...lots of great late-night laughs. It felt so good to see everyone again. Tonight I finally deflated the air mattress and sprawled out onto my grass green shag rug. The room feels so big and empty now.

A Record of Sacrifice

I feel like I'm constantly referring to the NYTimes and I would like to branch out a little but I just saw this editorial article from last weekend about Obama's possible lift of the ban on photography of American soldiers who have died in combat. I've been preparing for a presentation about contemporary photography inspired by the current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art - 'REALITY CHECK: Truth and Illusion in Contemporary Photography.' This article about the ban on photography has made me consider the powerful effect of not seeing. If people still believe that photography represents "the truth" then this ban has been a serious act of censorship. Why, for the past 8 years, have we been bombarded with reality tv shows? We've been shown "the truth" about loosing weight, finding a mate, decorating a home, building a career, etc. but we haven't seen "the truth" about the casualties of a very real war. Does this make sense?

I recently sent this article to my dad because he's always worried about the stability of my future as an artist. I thought the message was encouraging and inspiring - although I'm not sure that he saw it in the same way. His reply email ended with this:

One idea you might pursue: Think about the current mood of our nation; what are people thinking about? Try to express those thoughts and feelings with your art.

I haven't told him yet about my upcoming show that opens on Saturday. I'll be doing something slightly risky and I'm sure, if he saw it, he would think I've gone off the deep end but I'm really looking forward to it.

Yesterday I went to the Studio Museum in Harlem to see the Barkley L. Hendricks exhibition which was awesome! While I was there they happened to be screening a great 1978 Jamaican film called Rockers.

I went to a great show at Yossi Milo Gallery on Saturday. These large photographic images have been digitally manipulated to look like beautiful paintings about color, shape, and form. My most recent painting is strangely similar in an opposite way...I'll post an image of it soon.

I've been thinking about this interesting early video (1975) by Cindy Sherman which led me to this crazy website called www.dollclothessuperstore.com Be sure to check out the matching girl and doll clothes. It got me thinking about families who wear matching clothes. It's common to see twins dressed alike but what about groups of family members who dress alike for portraits or on vacation? Or what about couples who wear matching clothes? Like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. I started a little collection of photos of couples who dress alike.

Last night I watched the Frontline special Heat on PBS. After listening to frightening interviews with scientists and politicians regarding the future of our planet, I was most upset over the fact that ExxonMobil and Ford and GM seem as though they're just living it up before the world comes to an end in about 40 or 50 years when they run out of drilling options. It's as if all these really smart scientists who work for big oil companies have decided not to release their plans to use alternative energy because they'd rather live out the rest of their expensive lives with giant plasma TVs and SUVs. Who cares about the grand kids! Can that be true? According to several of the interviews, the U.S. has the technology to make changes but we don't have the support of the government or the big money investors. Other countries (including Europe and Japan) are much more reliant on wind and solar power - this isn't something new. GM introduced an electric car called the EV1 in 1996. After a few years of surprising success, the project was discontinued in 1999 just as it was becoming clear that California would be unable to enforce their clean vehicle regulations. All existing cars were removed from the roads and crushed as part of a "recycling" program in 2003.

Growing up in Ohio as the daughter of an antique car enthusiast, I went on family vacations to Dearborne, MI, watched old 1930's Chevrolet advertisements on microfilm in the basement, and observed my father's steady hand as he explained the process of pin-striping to me in the garage. My mother has multiple albums of photos showing my brother and I at various "meets" and "tours" around the country. American cars are an important part of my life. Even today I am the proud driver of a 1997 Ford Escort that once belonged to my grandfather.

I am saddened by the current state of the American automobile industry and I hope that our next president will make a major effort to turn things around.

WHY SARAH PALIN?

Finally, someone has written about the deeper meaning of this presidential race: Obama and the Palin Effect
Over the past week I have been getting ready to shoot a new video about Sarah Palin (played by me). I won't reveal the details yet because I hope the final product will be able to speak for itself but it is important to know that I am not trying to make a joke out of this situation. Of course I thoroughly enjoyed Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's SNL skit but I have serious questions. What does it mean to be that one person who represents an entire country? What does it feel like to be responsible for decisions that can impact the entire world? How can one person balance their actions and words to make everyone happy? Are these kinds of people really "wired" in a way that gives them a special ability to handle politics? Or are they just like everyone else in America? Do they know how to cry? Do they understand what it means to cry? These are things that I think about a lot. I like the fact that the "American Girl" doll cannot cry and I am planning to use my doll in the video. She is a cold, frozen figure made out of plastic that has zero emotion. Is this some kind of ideal for young girls? Is this the kind of woman that Sarah Palin is? What do we want from her? She is a nice, smiling, attractive woman. Just like me, she is trying to "do her best" but the reality of the situation is that she is uninformed and under experienced. I often feel uninformed and under experienced about a lot of issues in politics but I'm not trying to run for Vice President. Why is she doing this and why can she not admit to the enormity of this situation that she has gotten herself into? Why would it be a bad thing for her to hesitate or "blink"? Shouldn't she take her time in committing to a presidential race? Is it a good thing that she is unemotional and ignorant about world affairs? Will American women really vote for her based on "fear, rejection, hostility to change, and narrow-mindedness"? How can it be that so many people are that afraid of change?

I cannot believe this article I read in the Columbus Dispatch, my hometown newspaper. If you are not familiar with the recent international hit song "I kissed a girl and I liked it," you can watch the music video on youtube. Reverend Dave Allison, of Havens Corners Church in Blacklick, OH said he put the sign up outside the church "as a loving warning to teens." This is so crazy on so many levels. Imagine the people driving by who have never heard of this song. What are they thinking? In any case, it's nice to see that a song can have such a strong impact on people across America.

I've been reading articles and watching online videos about Moral Psychology. I am particularly interested in the work of Dr. Jonathan Haidt, a psychology professor at the University of Virginia. He has a book called "The Happiness Hypothesis" which I am hoping to find at the library. I first found out about Dr. Haidt when I read this article about the evolution of human morality in the NY Times.
